Aeros Stat of the Day:

. Akron Aeros fielder John Drennen, Wednesday night's hero, now has a .327 batting average in 29 home games this season and also is batting .304 (31-for-104) with runners on base.

Aerodynamics.

. Evening the Score. The Aeros won in dramatic fashion Wednesday night by the final score of 5-4 over the Richmond Flying Squirrels as right fielder John Drennen delivered a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning. Second baseman Jason Kipnis began his big offensive night as well with a two-run homer in the first to give the hosts the quick advantage. Richmond finally responded against Akron starting pitcher Paolo Espino in the fifth inning to take a 4-2 thanks to a three-run shot by left fielder Clay Timpner. Aeros center fielder Jordan Henry and Kipnis provided back-to-back run-scoring singles later in that frame while Lonnie Chisenhall was hit by a pitch with one out in the eighth before stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Drennen then singled on a clutch 3-1 pitch to left field for the final run as Akron closer Bryce Stowell (1-0) earned the win with two shutout innings and Richmond reliever Andy Sisco (0-4) took the loss.

. Wildcat Pride. Kipnis had his eight-game Double-A hitting streak snapped in the opener Tuesday against the Flying Squirrels but responded furiously last night. His first-inning homer was his third for Akron and he now has a .342 batting average with nine runs scored in 10 games since his promotion from Class A Kinston. Both he and the eventual hero Drennen wore old-fashioned stirrups during the contest last night. Cleveland selected the current 23-year-old Kipnis out of Arizona State University in the second round of the June 2009 Draft and he now has a solid .307 batting average in 93 career minor league games.

. The Closer. The most dominant pitcher for the Aeros over the past month has clearly been the reliever Stowell. He shut down Richmond again yesterday and has now delivered 19 consecutive scoreless innings to begin his Double-A career. He earned the promotion from the K-Tribe back on May 20th and has had an absolutely phenomenal combined season in the Cleveland Indians minor league system. The California, Irvine product is now 2-0 with six saves and a 0.81 ERA in 22 appearances (one start) with 65 strikeouts against only 16 walks and a .203 batting average against in 44.1 innings pitched.

. Steal My Sunshine. The two stolen bases by Henry and Chisenhall Wednesday tied a team-high for most steals in a game this season. Akron now has six stolen bases against only one caught stealing since Henry was promoted to the team from Class A Kinston last week. The Aeros remain in last in the league with only 18 stolen bases this year, 10 fewer than the next worst team.

. Catching Up. Akron catcher Damaso Espino also collected a double and a single during the victory Wednesday night at Canal Park. He currently leads the team with a .314 batting average and his presence on the roster has been a catalyst for the recent Aeros success. In fact, active catchers Espino and Miguel Perez own a combined 27-20 record in games started this season.
