Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

AKRON, OH - The Akron Aeros hung on for a, 3-2, victory over the Richmond Flying Squirrels in front of 4,949 on Thursday afternoon at Canal Park. The victory also earned Akron the series win, as they claimed the final two games of the three-game series

Following a 19-minute rain-delay, the Aeros got after Squirrels' right-hander Daryl Maday in the second inning. With two outs in the inning, Carlos Rivero singled to start the rally. Jerad Head followed and laid down a bunt-single that put two runers aboard. Tim Fedroff put Akron on top with an RBI single and Miguel Perez made it 2-0 with a single to score Head.

Richmond answered immediately in the third when Darren Ford led off with a single. He stole second base and advanced to third on a wild-pitch from Akron left-hander Nick Hagadone. Brandon Crawford walked and with runners at the corners, Hagadone uncorked a second wild-pitch that allowed Ford to score and Crawford to move to second. Thomas Neal followed and smacked an RBI single back through the box and into center field. Crawford scored on the play to tie the ballgame, 2-2.

The Aeros wrestled the lead back in the bottom of the inning as Jason Kipnis led off with a single. Lonnie Chisenhall followed with a single and after a fielder's choice, the Aeros had runners at the corners with one out. John Drennen, Wednesday's hero, then delivered a single to plate Kipnis and give Akron the lead back, 3-2.

Hagadone lasted just three innings and didn't factor in the decision. The lefty allowed a pair of runs on four hits, walked three and struck out seven.

Maday (8-4) rebounded following his troubles in the third inning, retiring the next 10 batters that he faced. He lasted into the eighth inning, ultimately working 7 2/3 innings and allowing just the three runs on 11 hits. He walked one and struck out four, but endured the loss as Richmond was silenced by the Akron bullpen.

Right-handers Bryan Price, Connor Graham and Steven Wright each stymied the Squirrels for two innings in relief. Price (2-2) earned the win behind Hagadone, while Wright recorded his third save of the season.

The Squirrels travel to Erie, PA, to open a three-game series against the Erie SeaWolves (Detroit Tigers) on Friday night at 7:05 PM. RHP David Mixon (7-3, 3.07) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Duane Below (3-6, 4.19) for Erie.
