READING, Pa. - The Bowie Baysox avoided a three game sweep Thursday night by defeating the Reading Phillies 6-3. The win improves the Baysox record to 37-35 on the season and keeps them in second place in the six-team Eastern League Western Division, 11.0 games behind league leaders Altoona.

Bowie right-hander Chorye Spoone continued his strong 2010 campaign by surrendering just four hits through 6.0 shutout innings as the win improved his record to 6-5. Five Baysox hitters had multi-hit performances each with one RBI a piece. The Baysox held off a late surge by the Phillies, who scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Spoone has not allowed more than two earned runs in a start since May 6 and has pitched at least five innings in each of his nine starts during that stretch with a 5-1 record. In tonight's game, Spoone helped himself out by retiring five out of six leadoff hitters. However, he struggled with control, walking five batters, and raising his pitch count. He compensated for the walks by making his pitches in critical situations.

Eager to avoid a three-game sweep, the Baysox jumped out to an early lead, scoring three times in the top of the first inning. After leadoff man Jonathan Tucker was retired on a groundball to the pitcher, designated hitter Ryan Adams and left fielder Tyler Henson hit back-to-back doubles to put runners on second and third with only one out. Right fielder Joel Guzman, first baseman Robbie Widlansky and third baseman Brandon Waring opened a 3-0 lead with consecutive singles that plated Adams, Henson and Guzman..

Spoone ran into some control issues early on, walking back-to-back hitters with one out in the bottom of the first. Spoone escaped the jam by inducing designated hitter Tagg Bozied to ground into a 5-4-3 double play.

The Baysox tacked on two more runs in the top of the third inning with a leadoff home run by Henson to right-center and an RBI groundout by catcher Steve Lerud. Henson went 11-for-26 (.423) in six games against the Phillies this season. Baysox shortstop Greg Miclat, playing in his Double-A debut, hit a groundball to first base that could have been an inning-ending double play if not for a fielding error by Reading first baseman Matthew Rizzotti that left the bases loaded. Lerud followed with a groundout to Rizzotti that plated Guzman from third base and stretched the Baysox lead to five runs.

The Baysox added one more run in the top of the sixth inning, which opened with Lerud taking first after being hit by a pitch. Second baseman Carlos Rojas advanced him to second with a ground out and he took third when Tucker grounded out to second base. Adams sent Rojas across the plate with an infield single that put the Baysox up 6-0

Spoone was relieved of his duties after the sixth inning when Manager Brad Komminsk brought on the usually reliable right-handed reliever Pat Egan. After a scoreless seventh inning, Egan ran into trouble in the bottom of the eighth when designated hitter Kevin Mahar hit a pinch-hit solo home run to slightly tighten the gap at 6-1. After a single and a fielder's choice forceout, Reading catcher Tuffy Gosewisch tripled to right field. Shortstop Freddy Galvis followed with an RBI single to bring the Phillies within three. Right-hander Pedro Beato was brought on to limit the damage. He retired the first man he faced, ending the inning and keeping the three run lead intact.

Beato returned to the hill in the bottom of the ninth, and retired the side in order to earn his fifth save of the season, tying him with Egan for the team lead. The Baysox finished their six-game season series against the Phillies with a 2-4 record.

The Baysox return to action when they travel west across Pennsylvania to open up a three-game weekend series with the Altoona Curve on Friday at 7:00 p.m.

They return to Bowie on Monday, June 28, for eight games against the Erie SeaWolves and Akron Aeros. The series with Erie includes a doubleheader on Monday and Daddy/Daughter Date Night on Wednesday, June 30. Fathers and their daughters can get two reserved tickets and two hot dogs for $20, with additional tickets available for $10 each.

The Aeros roll in to town during the Baysox All-American Weekend, featuring fireworks shows on July 2, 3 and 4. Saturday, July 3, is Stress Less Saturday, with a chance to win a family vacation courtesy of Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Sunday, July 4, is the Baysox Independence Day Celebration, with a spectacular extended fireworks show and an auction of special stars-and-stripes Baysox jerseys that will benefit AMVETS.
