
Three-Run Sixth Propels Salem to Victory over Birds

SALEM, Va. - A three-run sixth inning for the Salem Red Sox turned out to be the difference in a 7-5 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Friday night from Haley Toyota Field.
Already leading 4-3 into the sixth, Salem (9-12) added on. Victor Acosta scored on a passed ball before Jarren Duran and Pedro Castellanos ripped RBI singles to make it 7-3. Two of the three runs were charged to Myrtle Beach (7-15) starter Paul Richan (2-1), who took the loss on the night.
In the eighth, Yeiler Peguero smacked a two-run triple down the right-field line for the Birds, scoring Jhonny Bethencourt and Grant Fennell , to cut the deficit to 7-5, but they could not continue the comeback.
Enmanuel De Jesus (1-3) earned the win for the Red Sox, throwing five innings while allowing three runs. Jake Cosart saved his fourth game of the season by recording the final four outs.
Back in the first inning, Salem jumped out in front by tallying two runs. Castellanos plated Duran with a sacrifice fly and Joseph Monge laced an RBI single to make it 2-0.
The Red Sox then tacked on with a Marco Hernandez RBI single in the second to increase the advantage to 3-0.
In the third, Miguel Amaya put the Pelicans on the board with a two-run homer, his team-high fourth of the season, and Peguero doubled home a run in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3.
A go-ahead, fourth-inning RBI single from Duran put the Red Sox out in front for good. Duran finished 4-for-5 on the day with two RBIs, three runs scored, a double and two stolen bases.
Myrtle Beach takes on the Red Sox in game two of the three-game set on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. RHP Javier Assad (0-2, 2.77) takes the mound for the Birds against RHP Kutter Crawford (0-0, 2.00) for the Sox.
