Peoria Chiefs News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA- The Chiefs were powered by three home runs in Peoria's 4-1 victory over Cedar Rapids Tuesday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Darlin Moquete hit a pair of solo homers, both against Cedar Rapids starter Jaylin Nowlin. The first came in the third to make it 1-0. Moquete did it again in the fifth to double the Peoria lead to 2-0.
Up 2-1 in the top of the ninth, an R.J. Yeager single set up a Jimmy Crooks two-run blast off reliever Malik Barrington to extend the lead to 4-1.
Crooks and Moquete now have seven home runs on the season, tied for the team lead.
Peoria pitchers combined to allow just one run on five hits. Inoahan Paniagua made his second High-A start of the year, delivering three shutout innings without allowing a hit.
Joseph King followed with three innings of his own. He encountered some traffic on the bases in the bottom of the sixth. After allowing a solo home run to Emmanuel Rodriguez to make it a 2-1 contest, a walk and a single put two runners on with one out. Jorel Ortega hit a line drive to right-center field that was caught by a diving Alex Iadisernia, who was able to double off Kala'i Rosario at second base to end the threat.
King got his second win of the season to improve to 2-0 as a Chief. Nowlin fell to 3-6 despite a six-inning effort, allowing just two runs on five hits, punching out seven.
Peoria got two scoreless innings from Gustavo Rodriguez and a scoreless ninth from Edwin Nunez to secure the victory. For Nunez, it was his second save in a Chiefs uniform.
The Chiefs improve to 46-39 and 13-6 in the second half. Cedar Rapids falls to 51-34 and 11-8 in the latter half.
Game Two of this six-game set is scheduled for tomorrow at 12:05 p.m.
