Lugnuts Lock down Loons 2-0

Lansing, Mich. - The Great Lakes Loons (56-28) were shut out for the fifth time in their 84th game losing to the Lansing Lugnuts (39-45) 2-0 on a 76-degree partly cloudy Tuesday night at Jackson Field.

Great Lakes' offense managed just four hits, with their only multi-hit inning in the sixth. Down 1-0 with one out, Luis Diaz chopped a ball to centerfield for a single. Damon Keith next-up speared a ball into left field, dropped by Danny Bautista Jr, that put two on. Chris Newell loaded the bases with a cue shot infield single to third.

John Beller replaced Mac Lardner before the Newell single and would gain a strikeout and fielder's choice to close the inning.

Justin Wrobleski, despite being charged the loss, finished six innings. The No. 28 Dodgers prospect retired nine of the first 11 he faced, stranding Joshwan Wright at third base in the first and picked off Euribiel Angeles off first base in the third. Wright began the bottom of the fourth ripping a triple to right-center. He was plated by a Daniel Susac sacrifice fly to right field.

After an eight-pitch 1-2-3 fifth, the Lugnuts pushed across an unearned run in the sixth. After Dalton Rushing was ejected after striking out in the sixth, Chris Alleyne moved to second base, and starting second baseman Kenneth Betancourt slid over to first.

An Alleyne throwing error put on T.J. Schofield-Sam, he was plated by Daniel Susac's RBI single. Wrobleski finished the sixth, forcing a flyout stranding two in scoring position.

Jack Dreyer pitched the seventh and eighth for the Loons, retiring all six batters he faced. The left-hander has 10 strikeouts in his last three appearances, 5.1 combined innings.

Great Lakes positioned two in scoring position over the final three innings. In the seventh, Taylor Young walked and then stole second. He was picked off by Brock Whittlesey. Damon Keith doubled with two outs in the eighth, but a strikeout finished the inning.

The Loons and Lugnuts play game two of the six-game set in Michigan's capital tomorrow Wednesday, July 19th. The first pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
