Hudson Kimmerly's Home Run for Life
July 18, 2023 - Midwest League (MWL)
South Bend Cubs News Release
Today Hudson is a regular 10-year-old. But when he was born, he weighed just 2 pounds, four ounces - about the same as an eight-week-old kitten.
He and his brother Hayden were delivered by c-section at just 28 weeks and one day. Both went straight to the neonatal intensive care unit at Beacon Children's Hospital. "Hudson did amazing," said his mom. He had a few medical challenges but was well enough to go home after nine weeks.
Hayden faced more medical problems than his brother, fighting multiple battles for his life. Although Hayden received some of his care at a hospital five hours away, he and Hudson were able to spend a little time together in the hospital - with each other, and with the rest of their family.
"It was important to us to have them as close together as we could," explained mom. "Those moments and being able to have family together was amazing."
Hudson's brother Hayden passed away on February 2, 2014, after 14 months of life. But Hudson helps to keep his brother's memory alive by helping plan and deliver gifts in Hayden's honor each year. This year, Hudson gave gifts to Memorial Hospital's MedFlight team.
Mom calls Hudson the most compassionate, caring 10-year-old she knows. His family couldn't be more proud of him. And when he walks the bases, it won't be just for himself.
"I think Hudson walking those bases is going to be his opportunity to feel that he is a twin again, and to show and tell everyone, 'I'm here for us and we will always be together,'" she said.
