Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, VA - Brandon Segal and Zenon Konopka scored 12 seconds apart early in the third period to lift the Norfolk Admirals (3-6-1-2) to a 3-1 win over the Rockford IceHogs (7-6-0-0) on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena.
Pascal Pelletier put the visitors on top just 2:33 into the opening period. Petri Kontiola sent a centering pass from behind the net toward the left leg of Norfolk netminder Karri Ramo, and Pelletier chipped the puck over the goaltender's leg for a 1-0 IceHogs lead.
Following a scoreless second stanza, the Admirals came out of the gates firing in the opening four minutes of the final frame. Brandon Segal tied the game at 1-1 as a power play expired. Radek Smolenak cut behind the net from the left faceoff circle and centered a pass from the bottom of the right circle across the slot to Segal at the bottom of the opposite circle. After failing on his first shot, Segal sent a shot past Rockford netminder Antti Niemi at 3:35.
On the very next play, captain Zenon Konopka gave the Admirals the lead. Jason Ward took the puck behind the IceHogs net and centered a pass to Konopka in the slot. Konopka batted the puck into the net at 3:47.
Bracken Kearns tacked on an empty-net goal with a long shot from his own zone with 47 seconds left.
Karri Ramo (21 shots, 20 saves) earned his second straight win. Antti Niemi (18 shots, 16 saves) got the loss.
Norfolk was 0-3 on the power play. Rockford was 0-4.
Norfolk now departs on a two-week, seven-game road trip through the Atlantic Division. The Admirals next hit the ice on Tuesday afternoon in Lowell. The puck drops against the Devils at 4:00 p.m.
