Albany River Rats News Release

ALBANY, NY - Albany goaltender Justin Peters made 55 saves, but could not prevent a third period comeback as the Providence Bruins edged the River Rats 4-3 in overtime Saturday night at the Times Union Center. Providence came out flying and really put the pressure on Albany early in the game; it took the River Rats 14 minutes to record their first shot on goal. But the story of the first period was the rock-solid goaltending of Justin Peters, who turned aside 13 shots over that stretch to keep the game scoreless. For the remaining six minutes of the period Albany finally created some offense, out-shooting the Bruins 6-1 and coming within inches of the lead when Stefan Chaput clanked a wide-open rebound off of the goal post. Despite the gap in shots on goal, the first period ended in a goalless tie. Peters' dominance continued into the second period, helping Albany kill two penalties early on in the frame. The Rats broke through at 10:07 on a big slap shot by right wing Jerome Samson from just over the blue line. Chaput and Ben Olson recorded assists on the power play goal; Olson's assist was his first career professional point. The River Rats were given a golden opportunity to double their lead at 15:03 when Mike Angelidis was awarded a penalty shot after being hauled down on a shorthanded break-away, but Providence netminder Kevin Regan stopped the penalty shot to keep the P-Bruins within one. Providence out-shot the Rats 17-5 in the period, but Peters seemed to have an answer for everything he faced as the River Rats headed to the locker room up 1-0. Providence captain Jeremy Reich gave Albany a power play just 30 seconds into the third period and thirteen seconds later Chaput again found himself on the doorstep with the puck. This time the rookie center would slam it home for his first career pro goal to make it a 2-0 game 43 seconds into the third. The Bruins stopped Peters' shutout bid at 7:42 when Reich slid into the net, taking the puck with him and dislodging the cage in the process. The referee ruled that the puck had crossed the line before the goal came off its moorings and Reich was credited with a shorthanded goal. The Rats responded just 37 seconds later to regain their two-goal lead. Still on the power play, newcomer Dan Lacouture wrapped the puck around the net and found Jakub Petruzalek at point-blank range. Less than five minutes remaining in regulation the Bruins closed the lead 3-2 with a power play goal from Brad Marchand. Providence pulled their goaltender for the final minute and with 38 seconds left Martins Karsums banged in a rebound to tie the game and force overtime. 19 seconds into overtime, Albany rookie Nick Dodge was whistled for hooking, giving the Bruins a one-minute 4-on-3 advantage. They needed only 20 seconds to convert on the advantage as Vladimir Sobotka shoved a rebound to tally the game-winner at 0:39 into overtime to complete Providence's 4-3 comeback win. Providence goaltender Kevin Regan stopped 14-of-17 shots to earn the win, helping the Bruins improve to 7-3-1-0 on the season. River Rats starter Justin Peters made an incredible 55 saves on 59 shots in the overtime loss, as Albany fell to 2-6-2-1. Providence out-shot the River Rats 59-17 and went 2-for-10 on the power play; the Rats went 2-for-6 on the man advantage. The River Rats will complete their three-game home stand on Wednesday, November 12th as they host their I-90 Rivals the Syracuse Crunch for a 7:00 pm face off at the Times Union Center.
