BRIDGEPORT, CT. - Two goals each from Patrick Davis and Alexander Vasyunov were not enough for the Lowell Devils, as they dropped a 5-4 decision to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in overtime on Saturday at the Arena at Harbor Yard.
The Devils came out firing to begin the game, netting two goals in the first 3:14 of the contest. Davis started the scoring with his fourth goal of the season, a backhander that followed a Bridgeport turnover in their defensive zone. Lowell struck again less than a minute later, when Vasyunov collected his second AHL goal off a feed by Pascal Rheaume.
Bridgeport would halve the deficit quickly, when Jesse Joensuu was able to squeak one past Devils goalie Jeff Frazee. The Sound Tigers would tie the score later in the first off a Tyler Haskins goal, sending the teams to the locker room tied 2-2.
The Sound Tigers would claim a two-goal lead of their own early in the second stanza, thanks to goals from Mike Iggulden and the first of the season by Joe Callahan. The Devils would retaliate, and got back within one when Davis collected his second of the night, driving home a rebound off a shot by former Sound Tiger Matthew Spiller at 11:47. Not to be outdone, Vasyunov tallied his second of the game less than two minutes later to tie the game and chase Bridgeport's starting netminder Peter Mannino.
Neither team was able to forge ahead in the third period, as Frazee made a big save with two seconds left to preserve the tie and earn Lowell a point. The Sound Tigers would ultimately triumph in overtime, however, as Kurtis McLean ended it at 1:12 with his fourth goal of the season, stuffing a rebound past the sprawling Devils goalie.
Seven players tallied at least a point for Lowell, with Davis, Vasyunov, and Tyler Eckford (3 assists) turning in multiple-point efforts for the Devils in the loss. Jeff Frazee made 28 saves in his first AHL start of the season.
The Lowell Devils return home on Veterans Day - Tuesday, October 11 - when they host the Norfolk Admirals at the special time of 4:00p.m. Tickets for that game and all other Devils' home games during the 2008-09 season are now on sale, and can be purchased by calling the Devils at (978) 458-PUCK (7825) or by logging onto www.lowelldevilshockey.com.
