Three Goal Second Secures Win over Falcons, 4-2

Providence Bruins News Release

PROVIDENCE, RI- Providence secured the win in the first night of the home-and-home series against the Springfield Flacons with a 4-2 effort.

The P-Bruins played with confidence in the first period, firing 10 shots on net while defensively holding the Falcons to 5. The Providence penalty kill unit looked fast and aggressive, producing more offensive opportunities than they allowed in the sole PK of the period.

Zack Phillips lit the lamp 1:56 into the second frame with a hard wrist shot from the face off circle that went 5-hole on Lanhamer. Phillips has now notched at least one point in 5 of the last 6 games. Seth Griffith and Matt Irwin assisted on the goal.

Andrew Cherniwchan and Noel Acciari continued the first period trend of dominant penalty kills when Cherniwchan scored a short handed goal 6:00 into the frame. Acquire brought the puck into the offensive zone and worked to keep possession behind the net. The puck squirted free and Cherniwchan gloved it down from the slot and fired a shot into the back of the net to put the P-Bruins up 2-0.

Not one to be outdone, the power play unit scored one of their own with just 11.7 seconds left to play in the second. Alexander Khokhlachev dished the puck to Irwin who fired off a slap shot from the blue line. DeFazio deflected the puck in front to give Providence the 3-0 lead. Irwin has now notched 2 points in 4 of the last 5 games, and at least one point in 5 of the last 5.

The Falcons got things going in the third period, scoring just 0:21 into the final frame. They struck again to cut the Providence lead to one when Lane knocked in a rebound off Zane McIntyre.

Providence scored when Acciari potted an empty netter with under two minutes to play to make the final score 4-2.

The P-Bruins are back at home tomorrow January 10th for a rematch against the Falcons.
