Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, MA - The Springfield Falcons attempted a third period comeback but lost to the Providence Bruins by a 4-2 score on Saturday night.

The opening period didn't see much offense as the teams combined for only 15 shots; which Providence led 10-5. The period featured the Falcons killing a penalty when Dakota Mermis took a high-sticking infraction at the 10:07 mark. Marek Langhamer also denied Zack Phillips on a breakaway attempt midway through the scoreless period.

Providence broke the scoreless tie when Seth Griffith found Phillips in the neutral zone in stride. Phillips took the puck into the Springfield zone and fired a shot over Langhamer's shoulder. Matt Irwin also picked up an assist on the goal scored at 1:56. The Falcons got a power play chance minutes later, but disaster struck on the man advantage. Noel Acciari forced a turnover behind the Flacon net and flipped the puck to Andrew Cherniwchan. The forward settled the puck and beat Langhamer at 6:00 to make it a two-goal game. The Bruins would add more insurance on the power play as Brandon DeFazio tipped a shot from Irwin past Langhamer. Alexander Khokhlachev added an assist on the goal scored at 19:48.

The Falcons, trailing 3-0, got on the board in the opening moments of the third period as Eric Selleck tipped a centering pass behind Zane McIntyre. Domenic Monardo made the initial pass that also hit off the stick of Ross Mauermann before Selleck tipped it home 21 seconds into the period. The Flacons parlayed that momentum into a second goal as Phil Lane banged a rebound past McIntyre at 9:23. Corey Potter was able to keep to puck in the offensive zone and let a point-shot go that McIntyre initially stopped before Lane finished the play. The Bruins retook a two-goal lead as Acciari deposited the puck into the empty net at 18:37. Colby Cave got on the score sheet by picking up an assist on the goal. Langhamer fell to a 1-2-0 record with 19 stops. McIntyre made 23 saves to improve to 6-6-3.

The weekend concludes with a 3:05 p.m. puck drop in Providence against the Bruins. The game will be broadcasted live from the Dunkin' Donuts Center on NewsRadio560 WHYN.
