Three-Goal Second Period Downs Monarchs

MANCHESTER, NH - Lehigh Valley scored three goals in the second period, lifting them to a 3-2 win over the Monarchs on Friday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

Manchester went 1-for-6 on the power play tonight, and did not score on either of two power plays that lasted five minutes.

"It's the difference in the game," Head Coach Mike Stothers said about the power play. "We get two five minute power plays and we get nothing from it. We don't deserve to win a hockey game... We'll continue to work on it. Continue to tinker with some things until we get the right answers."

7:56 into the first period, Monarchs right winger Zach O'Brien took a hit from behind from Phantoms center Nick Cousins. O'Brien left the ice with assistance from trainers, while Cousins received a game misconduct along with a five minute major for boarding. The Monarchs were unable to capitalize on the power play after generating multiple chances.

After a scoreless first period the Monarchs opened the scoring 3:46 into the second on the power play. Colin Miller scored his third goal of season as he put a one-timer from Jamie McBain high blocker side on Phantoms goalie Rob Zepp. Miller had a clear shooting lane to the net as he stood at the top of the offensive zone circle, giving the Monarchs a 1-0 lead early in the second.

The Phantoms answered at 10:57 in the second period off a Jeff Schultz penalty. Scott Laughton took the puck from the Monarchs blue line, skated toward the net before dishing the puck off to Andrew Gordon. Gordon crashed the net beating Jean-Francois Berube short side for his second goal of the year, evening the game at 1-1.

Lehigh Valley added another goal 4:06 later as Gordon would net his second of the night off an offensive zone face-off win.

The Phantoms managed to tally another second period goal at 18:08 when Taylor Leier put home a trickling puck that Berube was scrambling to cover with his glove. The goal gave the Phantoms 3 unanswered goals and a 3-1 lead after two periods.

At 9:16 in the third period, Nic Dowd scored his first goal of the season. Dowd took the puck from the skates of right wing Sean Backman, who was pinned against the boards in the corner. With a defender on him, Dowd was able to curl up toward the net and put the puck far low glove side to cut the deficit to one goal.

The Monarchs racked up 44 shots, including 16 in the third period.

Manchester will look to rebound tomorrow night when they host Springfield at 7:00 P.M. at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

* Dowd's goal was his first as a pro in the regular season. He scored once for Manchester in the playoffs last year. * The Monarchs' 44 shots tonight were their most in a game this season. * The Monarchs have scored first in seven of their nine games this season, going 5-2 in those contests. * Rob Zepp made 42 saves for the Phantoms to earn the win.
