IceCaps' Comeback Bid Falls Short in Loss to Falcons

November 7, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release

The St. John's IceCaps were unable to complete the comeback in a 6-4 loss to the Springfield Falcons Friday night at MassMutual Center.

Despite a three-point night from rookie Chase Balisy, St. John's dropped its second straight versus Springfield and is now winless in its last six games (0-5-0-1).

Dana Tyrell had two goals and an assist for Springfield while defenceman Austen Madaisky had a goal and a helper, including the game-winner.

For the second game in a row the Falcons got off to a fast start with a goal less than 1:30 into the game. A centering pass by T.J. Tynan found Ryan Craig in front, who dished to Sean Collins for the wide open net and a 1-0 Falcons lead.

Balisy continued his impressive play of late and evened the score on a delayed penalty at 12:37 of the first. The rookie cruised in on a two-on-one rush and decided to keep, snapping a shot underneath the arm of Oscar Dansk.

Tyrell gave the Falcons the lead with just 18 seconds left in the first on a nice solo effort. Tyrell danced in over the blueline and cut towards the middle near the bottom of the right circle before beating Budaj low on the blocker side for a 2-1 Springfield lead.

The early period goals continued when Jerry D'Amigo gave the home team a 3-1 advantage just 2:01 into the second after the minor penalty to Scott Kosmachuk expired, with assists from Tyrell and Denny Urban.

The IceCaps cut the lead to 3-2 at 12:45 of the second on Albert's second shorthanded tally of the season. After a great forecheck by Albert and Lipon to force a turnover from goaltender Dansk, Albert gobbled up the loose puck in front and buried it for his fourth of the season.

Springfield killed the momentum at 16:29 with the teams playing four-on-four. Madaisky threw one at the net that was redirected by Tyrell past Budaj to make it 4-2 Falcons.

Madaisky added the fifth Falcons goal at 8:36 of the third when he took a pass in the high slot and ripped a shot over Budaj's blocker to make it 5-2.

O'Neill got that one back minutes later on a seeing-eye shot from the left point that snuck over Dansk's left shoulder to narrow the gap to two.

Fredheim brought the IceCaps to within one with just over five minutes remaining in the third on a power play. Balisy's shot from the right circle caromed to Fredheim, who had pinched from the left point, and the veteran defenceman banged home the rebound to make it 5-4, but that's as close as the IceCaps would come. Lukas Sedlak added the empty-netter with seconds remaining.
