Monsters Fall to Comets, 4-1
November 7, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
The three-game point streak of the Lake Erie Monsters (4-5-1-1) was snapped Friday night by the American Hockey League-leading Utica Comets (9-1-2-0), as the Monsters fell to the Comets 4-1. Borna Rendulic scored the lone goal for the Monsters, while Calvin Pickard stopped 31 shots in net. The Monsters are back in action on Wednesday in Grand Rapids; a game that airs live on AM 1420 "ËThe Answer' at 7:00 p.m.
Mike Zalewski gave Utica a 1-0 lead at 1:54 of the first period when he streaked through the right circle and sent a puck top-shelf past Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard. Utica used the second period to extend their lead to 3-0 with goals from Hunter Shinkaruk at 4:39, and Frank Corrado at the middle frame's 8:03 mark.
Borna Rendulic gave the Monsters a spark at the 3:19 mark of the third period with an unassisted highlight-reel goal. Rendulic worked in from the neutral zone, split the Utica defense, and chipped a shot over the shoulder of Utica goalie Joacim Eriksson to pull the Monsters within a pair. The goal, which was the second of the season for Rendulic, would be all the scoring the game for the Monsters.
Darren Archibald finished off the scoring for Utica with an empty-net tally at 18:37 of the third period, putting the Comets up 4-1.
Pickard stopped 31 of 34 shots for the Monsters in the loss; he is now 3-3-2. Eriksson is 4-1-1 after the win; he stopped 29 of 30 shots.
The Monsters visit Grand Rapids Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The game airs live on AM 1420 "ËThe Answer'.
