PROVIDENCE, R. I. -The Providence Bruins fell to the Portland Pirates tonight in their first of three games this weekend.

The P-Bruins and Pirates came out strong in the first period, battling back-and-forth with shots 10-9 in favor of the Portland and no goals made. That was until right-winger Henrik Samuelsson got one past Malcolm Subban with assists from Jordan Martinook and Dylan Reese with 3:31 left in the period. The two teams retreated to the locker room with a first period score of 1-0.

Portland gained a 2-0 lead just 20 seconds into the second period and the P-Bruins replace Jeremy Smith for Subban in net. The goal was credited to Pirate's Captain Alexandre Bolduc with help from Martinook and Andrew Campbell. At 9:43 Providence defensman Steve Eminger was sent to the penalty box for interference and the other four P-Bruins on the ice began to pick up the pace. On the Pirates' power play, P-Bruin Justin Florek makes a breakaway and gets one in the back of the net past Portland goaltender Louis Domingue at 10:07. Shortly after that, with Ethan Werek in the penalty box for unsportsmanlike conduct, Bolduc scores with 5 on 3 and 8:48 left in the period assisted Reese and Lucas Lessio making the score 2-1 Portland.

Tempers rose and tension was high in the third period as the P-Bruins tried to make a comeback. But at 9:05, Portland center Tyler Gaudet shot the puck shorthanded through the legs of Smith and Jordan Szwarz earned the assist. The P-Bruins hadn't given up hope yet, and with only 1:26 left in the game, Ben Youds gets a slapshot past Domingue assited by Alexander Khokhlachev and Anthony Camara. Providence gives it one last shot by pulling Smith with one minute remaining, but they couldn't get the shots off. The final score of the game was 4-2.
