Amerks Open Homestand with 3-1 Loss to Binghamton
November 7, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... The Binghamton Senators scored three straight unanswered goals, including two in the final frame, to overcome a first-period deficit and defeat the Rochester Americans 3-1 Friday at The Blue Cross Arena. The loss stretches Rochester's winless streak to three games and brings the Amerks to 6-5-0-0 on the season.
Mikhail Grigorenko picked up the lone Amerks goal midway through the third period, with Joel Armia and captain Drew Bagnall adding assists. Nathan Lieuwen started in net for Rochester and saved 32 of the 35 shots he faced.
Alex Guptill, Ryan Dzingel and local product Shane Prince all scored goals for the visiting Senators, while Carter Camper and Patrick Mullen finished with two assists each. Andrew Hammond made 24 saves for his third win of the season, snapping a personal five-game slide.
After a relatively quiet opening 10 minutes, the Amerks were the first to strike with a goal 11:36 into the first period on Grigorenko's fifth goal of the season. The play was started with a pass from Armia to Grigorenko in the middle of the Binghamton zone, and Grigorenko made a quick backhand-to-forehand move and slipped the puck past Hammond.
The B-Sens nearly tied the score minutes later during a bank attempt off of Lieuwen's back from behind the net. The puck bounced off the Amerks goaltender and nearly trickled over the goal line, but Nick Petrecki made a last-ditch effort and swept the puck out of harm's way.
Binghamton strung together some strong shifts during the second period that eventually led to its first score of the night when Dzingel sat on the doorstep and flipped home a rebound with 9:02 left in the second period.
After the Amerks couldn't convert on a power-play opportunity, Binghamton bounced back and scored to go up 2-1 when Guptill put home a rebound off of a shot from Camper. The visitors added insurance with 6:20 left in regulation on a nice move from Prince after the Spencerport native slipped through the Amerks defense and scored past Lieuwen's glove.
The Amerks pulled Lieuwen for the extra attacker with 2:31 left in the third period, but couldn't muster any more offense on Binghamton's defense.
The Amerks remain home on Saturday, Nov. 8 as they look to put a stop to the red-hot Jacob Markstrom and the first-place Utica Comets at The Blue Cross Arena. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will be the first of 10 scheduled meetings between the North Division rivals this season and will be broadcast live on FOX Sports 1280 Rochester.
