Bakersfield Condors News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif- The Bakersfield Condors announced today that the third annual Hockey-Thon raised more funds than any other single charity event in Condors history. $61,238 was raised on behalf "Links For Life," a local breast cancer resource center, up from $20,384 from the previous year, bringing the three-year event total to $105,494. Of the totals raised this year, $10,000 was donated directly by Condors Team Owner Jonathan Fleisig.

"A huge thank you to the hockey-thon participants and their supporters, the Condors and their owner Jonathan Fleisig and to this community," said Executive Director for Links For Life Jennifer Henry. "This was a fabulous event and we greatly appreciate everything, especially the leadership from Kevin Barrett."

Organized by former Condors player Kevin Barrett, this year's Hockey-Thon was completed over two days, on Feb. 16 and 17, and featured 130 participants completing a combined 27 hours of hockey.

"I am excited and proud of the hockey community here, as they helped raise over $100,000.00 dollars for breast cancer in the last three years," said Hockey- Thon Founder Kevin Barrett. "This town is simply amazing when it comes to rallying around a great cause. A sincere thank you to Jonathan Fleisig and all the players and volunteers that made this year's event possible."

Skaters were required to raise a minimum pledge of $200 dollars to participate, and in return they received a commemorative jersey and tickets to the Condors game on Feb. 17. Condors team owner Jonathan Fleisig also got into the act, pledging to donate $50 for every sign-up and 10% of the total proceeds, up to $10,000. Minimum pledge requirements were no set-back for Hockey-Thon participants as Tigger McAllister, Houston Reichel and Bob St. Louis each gathered more than $2,500 a piece.

The event also featured a celebrity game which preceded the Condors- Ice Dogs contest on Feb. 17. The celebrity match featured former Condors players Paul Rosebush, Glen Mears, Paul Willett, Quinn Fair, Scott Hay, Steve Dowhy, Jamie Cooke, Brian McCarthy, Al Murphy and Kevin Barrett himself. The Hockey-Thon was concluded with live and silent auctions during the Condors game. The auction consisted of all the personalized jerseys from the celebrity game and various hockey items. Rosebush's jersey went for $1,100.

Tonight, the Condors are in Stockton for a 7 p.m. showdown against the Thunder. Then Friday it's the first meeting of the year against the Phoenix RoadRunners, a 6:11 p.m. tilt in Phoenix. Bakersfield returns home Saturday for a re-match against the RoadRunners, and it's KGET-TV 17, The Big 96.5 KBKO & McDonald's Youth Jersey Giveaway night, with the first 2,000 children, 12-and-under, receiving a replica jersey of Condors defenseman Reagan Leslie.
