The Pup and the Cup
March 19, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Connecticut Whale News Release
Hartford, March 19, 2004 - The Calder Cup, representative of American Hockey League supremicy, will be in Hartford Saturday night. Sonar, the mascot of the Hartford Wolf Pack, will guard the coveted trophy. Fans can have their picture taken with the Cup and the pup during the game (while supplies last) and the first 5,000 fans through the gates will receive a Hartford Wolf pack pennant.
The Calder Cup tour is a preamble to the quickly approaching AHL playoffs, which start the week of April 12. The Calder Cup is one of the oldest trophies in North American sports. Teams have competed for the trophy since 1936-37. The cup carries names of the teams who have won the American Hockey League Championship for the past twenty years, including the Hartford Wolf Pack in 2000. The previous 47 championship team plaques are on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Canada.
The AHL's championship trophy is named after Hockey Hall of Famer Frank Calder, who served as the first president of the National Hockey League from 1917 to 1943. During the 1920's, Calder was instrumental in guiding professional hockey into the mainstream of the United States, including cities like New York, Boston, Chicago, and Detroit, while also helping form the American Hockey League.
The AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack hockey club is part of Madison Square Garden LP. Cablevision Systems Corporation owns a controlling interest in MSG LP, which also includes the New York Rangers (NHL), New York Knicks (NBA), the New York Liberty (WNBA), the MSG Network, Fox Sports Net and the Madison Square Garden arena complex.
