Springfield Falcons News Release
Providence, RI â Peter Ferraro posted a goal and an assist, but the Springfield Falcons came up short by a score of 3-2 to the Providence Bruins at the Dunkin' Donut Center in Rhode Island before a crowd of 6,853 on Friday evening. Recent addition Brad Boyes scored two goals for Providence. Falcons goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier stopped 24 of 27 shots while Hannu Toivonen made 21 saves to earn his 15th win of the season
Following a scoreless second period, Peter Ferraro made the score 2-1 just after a Springfield power play expired 17 seconds into the final frame. Ferraro lifted the puck into the top corner from the bottom of the left wing face-off circle for his team-leading 17th goal of the season. His brother Chris and veteran forward Gary Shuchuk collected assists on the marker.
However, the Bruins regained their two-goal advantage when Boyes scored his second goal of the game during a delayed penalty three minutes later.
With Pelletier on the bench for an extra attacker, Reirden carried the puck down the right wing and chipped a shot into the top corner to make the count 3-2 with 15.3 seconds left. The Falcons pressured to knot the game in the closing seconds, but ran out of time.
The P-Bruins twice crashed the net to score late in the opening frame. Pelletier staved off an attempt by Andre Savage, who carried the puck to the front of the net from the left wing, but Ivan Huml tallied his 15th goal of the season off the rebound with 3:20 remaining in the period. The goal came during the Bruins' first power play of the game.
Boyes, the AHL's fourth-leading scorer, lifted a shot over Pelletier with one minute left in the frame after the puck squirted out of a scramble to the right of the Falcons' net. The goal was the 27th of the campaign for Boyes, who was recently acquired by the Boston Bruins from the San Jose Sharks in a three-way trade deadline deal that sent defenseman Jeff Jillson to the Buffalo Sabres.
The first period also featured a spirited bout between Springfield left wing Trevor Gillies and Providence forward Colton Orr.
Providence held a 27-23 shot advantage in the game.
The Falcons were scoreless on five power-play chances in the game including 47 seconds with a two-man advantage in the second period. The Bruins finished the contest one-for four on the power play.
Ice Chips: Chris Ferraro was ejected from the game with 5:29 remaining to play when his jersey proved not to be tied down during a tussle with Boyes.
The Falcons released center Garrett Prosofsky from his professional tryout agreement on Friday. Prosofsky, who leads the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones in scoring this season, skated in one game for Springfield.
The Falcons will visit the Lowell Lock Monsters at Tsongas Arena on Saturday in a 7:00 pm contest. It will be the second of four straight road games for Springfield. The club will return to the home ice of the Springfield Civic Center to face the Portland Pirates on Friday, March 26th.
