Coyotes assign defenseman Callahan to Falcons

Springfield, MA - The Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League (AHL) today announced that defenseman Joe Callahan has been assigned to the club by the Phoenix Coyotes, their National Hockey League affiliate. The Coyotes' signing of Callahan to a multi-year deal was announced by the team's general manager Michael Barnett today.

Callahan, 21, led Yale University (ECAC) defensemen and ranked fifth on the team overall in scoring with 20 points (6g, 14a) this season. The Brockton, Massachusetts native posted a hat trick in a 5-4 Yale win over RPI on December 5th. Callahan registered 44 points (11g, 33a) in 94 contests and never missed a game during his three-year collegiate career at Yale.

Callahan was the Coyotes' fourth choice (3rd round, 70th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. The 6'3", 219-pounder will make his professional debut for the Falcons tonight against the Providence Bruins at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Rhode Island. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

Tonight's contest begins a string of four consecutive road games for the Falcons. The club will return to the home ice of the Springfield Civic Center to face the Portland Pirates on Friday, March 26th.
