Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
With the game tied in the top of the tenth, Ian Gac sent a ball screaming over the wall in right field, a two-run blast, and an 8-6 victory for the Kannapolis Intimidators to close out a four game series with three wins against the Lexington Legends on Thursday night.
The Legends (12-16) got out to an early 2-0 lead as JD Martinez hit a 2-run bomb to left in the first inning off starter Joe Serafin before the Intimidators (14-14) seemingly took control of the ballgame. Serafin went six innings and allowed three runs, two earned but did not factor in the decision.
The Intimidators got on the board in the second as Nick Ciolli doubled and his college teammate Brady Shoemaker doubled him home to make it 2-1. Shoemaker's wasn't done with just that one hit. In the fourth, Kyle Colligan led the inning off with a single, extending his hitting streak to 13 games before Gac doubled him to third. Colligan would then score on a groundout. With a runner on later in the inning, Shoemaker launched one to the opposite field for his first home run of the season, a two-run blast and a 4-2 lead.
The Intimidators added two more in the sixth after the Legends grabbed one in the fifth to make it 6-3 before the Legends mounted their comeback. Against reliever Ryan Buch in the seventh Jonathan Fixler doubled, Grant Hogue singled and Jose Altuve walked to load the bases. With the bases loaded Jiovanni Mier singled a run home and that ran Buch from the game. Brandon Kloess then entered and allowed two to score on a grounder in the infield and a wild pitch. The game went to extras with Gac's homer deciding the game.
Kloess (1-0) went 3.2 innings, striking out three and not allowing a base hit. Kirk Clark allowed the home run to Gac but Mike Modica (0-1) allowed the leadoff single to Daniel Wagner and took the loss. Starter Robert Donovan went five and allowed seven hits and four runs.
Shoemaker had four hits, including two doubles and a home run, Wagner had three hits and Ciolli went 2-for-5 with three runs scored. The Intimidators are back to the .500 mark.
The Intimidators look to get a game above .500 for the first time this season in Charleston, WV as they begin a four-game series with the West Virginia Power. Terry Doyle (3-1) will take on Kyle McPherson (1-1).
