Tonight: The first-place Gnats complete their four-game series with the Delmarva Shorebirds. After tonight, the Gnats are off to Lakewood, NJ for four games, Friday-Monday.

Last Night: The Sand Gnats needed 12 innings to beat Delmarva 1-0. It was the second extra-inning game of the series after Savannah had gone the first 24 games of the year without playing extra innings. LHP Mark Cohoon threw nine shutout innings for the Gnats, a new season high for a Savannah pitcher, yielding just four singles and a walk while striking out seven. In the 12th, the Gnats loaded the bases after a Sam Honeck double and scored the game's only run on an RBI groundout by pinch-hitter Dock Doyle.

Now Pitching: Colin McHugh will make his third start for the Sand Gnats this evening. McHugh has been effective in his last two relief appearances giving up a combined one run over seven innings. McHugh has moved through the Mets system one level a year, pitching for Kingsport in '08 and Brooklyn in '09. With Brooklyn, he was 8-2 with a 2.76 ERA in 75 innings over 14 starts. He struck out 79 batters and walked 21 while yielding only one home run. The Mets selected McHugh in the 18th round of the 2008 draft out of Berry (GA) College. In his junior season with Berry, he led the Southern States Athletic Conference with 9.05 strikeouts per nine innings. He finished his Berry career with a 13-9 record with five saves and 167 strikeouts and 66 walks in 171.1 collegiate innings.

Ouch/Roster Update: Sam Honeck was placed on the Gnats disabled list today with a broken tibia and fibula sustained in a collision at home plate in the 12th inning last night.

First Things First: The Gnats have had at least a share of first place since beating Augusta on April 21. The Gnats, who have the best record in the SAL, lead the Augusta GreenJackets by two games after Augusta took its third straight from Greenville yesterday. The two game lead is tied for the Gnats' largest this year.

Strong Starts and Finishes: The Gnats have outscored their opponents 25-10 in the first inning of games this year and a combined 40-17 over the last three innings of games including 12-5 in the seventh, 13-6 in the eighth and 15-6 in the ninth.

Road Warriors: The Gnats, at 8-3, have the best road record in the SAL. Just five of the SAL's 14 teams have winning records away from home. As a team, the Gnats have hit .237/.310/.335 (AVG/OBP/SLG) with 22 doubles, eight triples and four home runs at home to score 3.8 runs per game. On the road, the Gnats have hit .257/.333/.398 with a nearly identical 22 doubles, eight triples and seven homers, but scored 6.7 runs per game. The pitching has been strong everywhere, with a 2.26 ERA on the road and a total of three runs per game, versus a 2.69 ERA with a total of 3.125 runs per game at home.

Hot: Jefry Marte had his eight-game hit streak snapped last night.... Alex Gregory has hit safely in seven straight games. In those seven games, he is hitting .444 (12-for-27) with one double, four runs scored and an RBI.

Not: After an 0-4 Wednesday, Jeff Flagg is now 0-for-his-last-23 since a solo home run in the eighth inning of the Gnats' 11-2 loss to Hickory on April 26. ... Alonzo Harris is hitting .139 (5-for-36) in his last nine games.

Four for Sure: Savannah is 16-1 when scoring four or more runs and 2-8 when scoring three runs or fewer. When Gnats pitching allows fewer than four runs, the team is 14-4.
