Hagerstown Suns News Release
At a joint press conference on Wednesday afternoon, the Hagerstown Suns, the Hagerstown Police Department, the Washington County Sheriffs Office and the Washington County Narcotics Task Force announced the details and the start of Drug Free Washington County to help spread the word of drug prevention to children.
Parents and children are invited to take the Parent/Kid Challenge during Suns home games on May 14th, June 4th, June 26th, July 16th or August 13th. This is a quiz about drug prevention with local and national drug statistics and can help people learn about facts and risks of drugs with children. The quiz was created with the help of the Health Department's Community Anti-Drug Coalition.
"We encourage parents and youth to attend the event to help facilitate the conversation," says Washington County Sheriff Doug Mullendore. "Some parents have difficulty starting the conversation, and this is a good way to do that."
The first 200 parent/child teams to answer all the quiz questions correctly on each night will receive a free Suns hat and T-shirt.
"We wanted to create a way that the children want to participate," Suns assistant general manager Joel Pagliaro said.
Art Smith, Chief of Hagerstown Police, said that drug prevention to children has proven to be far more effective in combating drugs than other methods. "Kids who don't use drugs are the most likely to succeed in school and in life."
For more information on Drug Free Washington County, information will later be available at the Hagerstown Suns website.
