Braves Slam Past Suns

Rome, GA - The Rome Braves defeated the Hagerstown Suns 9-5 in front of 3,238 fans Thursday morning powered by a Robert Heffinger grand slam. Rome improves to 11-17 on the season.

Hagerstown scored the first run of the game in the first inning on a balk to plate Dan Lyons. The Suns extended their lead to 4-0 in the second as Eury Perez singled to score Adrian Nieto and Perez later scored on a sacrifice fly from Lyons. Francisco Soriano scored later on a single up the middle from Justin Bloxom.

Hagerstown starter, Josh Smoker, had a no hitter until the fifth but Rome led off the inning with three straight singles from Matt Weaver, Braeden Schlehuber and Derek Wiley. Kyle Rose was hit by a pitch to bring home Weaver followed by a Mycal Jones walk to score Schlehuber. The Braves finally broke through for the lead when Robert Hefflinger hit a 2-1 pitch for a grand slam (1) to left clearing the bases for the 6-4 lead.

Hagerstown battled back with another run in the seventh when Steven Souza scored on a throw to first after a dropped third strike.

Rome padded the lead in the eighth with two more runs for the 9-5 final score. Jones scored on a Hefflinger single to center and Hefflinger was later brought home on a RBI triple from Jordan Kreke.

Arodys Vizcaino (4-2) earns the win for Rome while Josh Smoker (0-5) picks up the loss for Hagerstown. Robert Hefflinger went 2 for 3 with six RBIs and two runs scored for the Braves.
