LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Brody Colvin allowed just two hits in 6.1 innings of work, while Anthony Hewitt and Adam Buschini had three hits apiece in leading Lakewood to a 7-2 victory over the Charleston RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action at FirstEnergy Park Thursday evening.
The series ends up split 2-2, with Lakewood improving to 15-13, while Charleston loses for the sixth time in eight games in dropping to 12-16.
Colvin (2-4), who entered the game with a 9.41 ERA and was tied for the league lead in losses, stifled the RiverDogs and received two double plays from his defense. The Louisiana native walked four and fanned five as well.
Lakewood started off with a 4-0 lead after the first inning against Sean Black, following a RBI single from Hewitt, Darin Ruf's RBI triple and Sebastian Valle's RBI groundout.
Leandro Castro and Hewitt roped consecutive doubles off the left-field wall to increase the BlueClaws' lead to 5-0 in the third inning.
Black (1-3), a New Jersey native, lasted just 4.0 innings allowing five runs on a season-high nine hits, with one walk and four punchouts.
The BlueClaws upped the advantage to 6-0 in the sixth on Jonathan Villar's RBI single through a drawn-in infield, after Buschini tripled to lead off the frame.
Charleston posted its first run in the seventh for a 6-1 score, when Luke Murton barreled home on a wild pitch by reliever Jacob Diekman.
Rob Lyerly's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning against right-hander Ebelin Lugo trimmed the deficit to 6-2.
However, Lakewood responded with a RBI double from Buschini - his third extra base hit of the game - setting the final margin at 7-2.
Lakewood posted 13 hits, seven of which went for extra bases. Buschini rapped a triple and two doubles, Hewitt hit a double with two singles and drove in a pair of runs, while Ruf knocked a triple and double with a RBI. Charleston was held to a season-low tying three base hits in the defeat.
Charleston embarks on the second-half of the road trip Friday night against the Delmarva Shorebirds, a Baltimore Orioles affiliate, scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md. Right-hander Jose Ramirez (1-1, 1.84 ERA) takes the hill for the RiverDogs, while the Shorebirds plan to pitch 2009 1st round selection Matt Hobgood (2-1, 3.90 ERA).
