Hagerstown Falls To Rome 9-5

The Hagerstown Suns fell to the Rome Braves 9-5 on Thursday afternoon on the road, splitting the four-game series with each winning two games.

The Suns got on the board in the first inning. With the bases loaded and two out with J.P. Ramirez up, Arodys Vizcaino (4-2) balked to allow Dan Lyons from third for a 1-0 lead.

Hagerstown pieced together some hits for three runs in the top of the second. With one away Eury Perez singled to center to score Adrian Nieto from second. Perez stole second and advanced to third on a bunt single by Francisco Soriano. Lyons followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Perez. After a Steven Souza single, Justin Bloxom hit a ground ball single to left to score Soriano from second for a 4-0 lead.

Josh Smoker (0-5) had a perfect game for the Suns thru the first four innings but ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. The Braves began with three singles to load the bases. After Smoker struck out L.V. Ware, Kyle Rose was hit by a pitch to score Matt Weaver. Mycal Jones followed with a walk to score Braeden Schlehuber to make it 4-2. The next batter, Robert Hefflinger hit a grand slam to left, his first home run of the season, to give Rome a 6-4 lead. Smoker went 4.1 innings, allowing six runs on the day.

The Braves put another run on the scoreboard in the next inning off Paul Applebee. With second and third with one away, Hefflinger hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring Rose home to push the lead to three up 7-4.

Hagerstown got closer in the seventh inning. With Souza on third and one out, Destin Hood struck out, but the ball got by the catcher. During the throw to first, Souza scored from third to cut the lead to two for a 7-5 Rome lead.

Rome put up two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth off Shane Erb. With two outs and Jones on second, Hefflinger singled to center to bring in Jones. The next batter, Jordan Kreke tripled to center to score Hefflinger from second for a 9-5 lead for the Braves, which was the eventual final score.

Vizcaino got the win for the Braves after pitching five innings with four runs, three of them earned, and five strikeouts.

The Suns fall to 15-12 on the season while the Braves improve to 11-17. Hagerstown will head to Augusta for a four-game set with the GreenJackets for the second half of the eight-game road trip, with the first game being on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Rome will begin a four-game series at home with the Asheville Tourists on Friday.
