Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Greenville Drive survived four errors to win 7-6 in 11 innings against the Augusta GreenJackets in front of more than 4,000 fans at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Thursday night. The GreenJackets were denied a series sweep for the third time this season but still took three of four from the Drive.
Drive hitters, who had been held to just ten hits through the first three games of the series, jumped out on Kyle Vazquez early and often. After an error kept the first inning alive, Ronald Bermudez tripled home a pair to give the Drive an early lead, ending a stretch of 20 consecutive scoreless innings for the Drive. Greenville got two more in the second on groundouts by Vladimir Frias and Jeremy Hazelbaker to extend their lead by two more. Bermudez's double in the third brought home run number five off Vazquez.
The Jackets fought back in the fifth, sending eight to the plate and scoring four times. Nick Liles brought in a run with a bases loaded sacrifice fly. Then with two outs, Evan Crawford singled home a pair and Ryan Cavan singled to score Crawford and bring the Jackets back to within a run.
Greenville got a run back in the seventh on a Michael Almanzar RBI base knock but the Jackets tied things in the home half of the inning on a run scoring groundout by Nick Liles and an error by shortstop Derrik Gibson. With runners at the corners, Gibson mishandled a throw from Frias on a ball hit up the middle by Chris Dominguez. Everyone was safe and Daniel Cook scored from third to tie the game.
Augusta had two runners each on base in both the eighth and tenth innings and couldn't take the lead. In the Drive half of the 11th with Derrik Gibson on at first, Chris McGuiness tripled off Jose Valdez (2-1) to score the eventual game-winner. In the bottom of the inning, Evan Crawford doubled to left but was stranded on third when Dominguez struck out to end the game.
Cesar Cabral (1-0) got the win in relief for Greenville with three scoreless innings of two-hit baseball, striking out three. Dennis Neuman weathered the Crawford double in the 11th to earn his third save of the year.
The GreenJackets welcome the Hagerstown Suns to town on Friday night, sending Chris Heston to the mound against Trevor Holder. The first 1,000 fans at the game will receive a free pink GreenJackets cap compliments of Doctors Hospital on "Pink at the Park Night." Only limited general admission seating remains. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
