HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads nine-game winning streak finally came to an end on Thursday night with a 6-4 loss to the Asheville Tourists before 2,020 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium. Despite the loss, Hickory still remains in first place in the Northern Division.
The Tourists (10-17) jumped out in front early with six runs against Crawdads starter RHP Wilmer Font (3-1, 5.84 ERA), knocking him out of the game after just two innings of work.
RHP Trevor Hurley and LHP Robbie Erlin shut down Asheville the rest of the way. Hurley struck out five through his four innings of work, surrendering just two hits, before Erlin dealt the final three scoreless frames to keep Hickory within striking distance.
The Crawdads (17-11) began to chip away at the six run lead in the fifth. LF Cristian Santana led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on another groundout by C Leonel De Los Santos to make it 6-1. Santana scored another run for Hickory in the seventh, coming in from first on a double to left center by 2B Joe Bonadonna.
The 'Dads made things interesting in the eighth, pulling to within two runs of tying the game on CF Miguel Velazquez's two-run jack to left field with RF Jared Prince on at first. Velazquez is now tied with Asheville 1B Jared Clark for first in the South Atlantic League with seven home runs.
