Zebulon, NC- The Tennessee Smokies (31-27) clinched the series win by outslugging the Carolina Mudcats (20-38) 16-9 Monday night at Five County Stadium.

Recently converted Carolina starter Jerry Gil (L, 2-3) continued his struggles as the Smokies ran him from the game in the second inning after he allowed six earned runs on four hits and four walks. Each of the next four Carolina relievers would allow at least one earned run.

Tennessee knocked 19 hits, and every starting position player for the Smokies scored at least one run. Jim Adduci led the way around the bases, coming around to score four times on three walks and two singles. Ty Wright and Tony Thomas each knocked homers for Tennessee.

Tennessee starter Andrew Cashner was knocked out of the game with one out in the fifth, falling two outs shy of qualifying for the win. Cashner allowed three earned runs on five hits and four walks in his 4 1/3 innings pitched. Marco Carillo ran into trouble of his own in the sixth when he allowed four runs on four hits, including a two-run home run off the bat of Logan Parker. Dustin Sasser (W, 2-0) pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Carillo to earn the win.

The first pitch of game four is set for 7:15 PM Tuesday night at Five County Stadium. Lefty Camilo Vazquez (4-4, 5.33) will make the start for Carolina against Hung-Wen Chen (7-9, 4.62) of Tennessee.
