Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSON, TENN. (AUGUST 24, 2009) - The Diamond Jaxx (31-27) rally for two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and beat the Birmingham Barons (36-22) on Monday night at Pringles Park, 4-3. The win gives the Jaxx a two game to one lead in the series and keeps West Tenn in a tie atop the Southern League North, with Tennessee. Diamond Jaxx starter, Dan Cortes struck out a season high 10 batters in a no decision, becoming the first Jaxx pitcher to strike out 10 in a game. Cortes surrendered a pair of runs on four hits in his eighth start for West Tenn. Greg Halman blasted his third homer of the series on Monday, his 24th of the season. Matt Mangini struck for two RBI in the game, and went 2-for-4 at the dish with a run scored. Mangini has hit in 12 of his last 13 games.
Johan Limonta brought home Greg Halman with an RBI single in the bottom of the first, with two outs to start the Jaxx scoring. West Tenn jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Monday night.
The Jaxx added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on the third homerun of the series by Greg Halman. The solo blast by the Jaxx right fielder gave the Jaxx a 2-0 lead. Halman increased his league high homer total to 24.
The Birmingham Barons struck back against the Jaxx in the top of the sixth, C.J. Retherford took a 3-2 pitch from Dan Cortes out of the ballpark to left. The two-run shot by Retherford knotted the score at 2-2.
The Barons took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning on a solo homerun by David Cook. The homer curled down the left field line and Cook becomes the first Southern League player to hit the 80 RBI plateau.
The Jaxx though rallied in the eighth, off of Barons reliever, John Lujan (1-5) for a pair of runs to take a lead. Lujan suffered the loss for the Barons. Matt Mangini lined a double to left plating Johan Limonta from first, evening the score at 3-3. After a Matt Mangini stolen base, Flemming Baez dropped down a safety squeeze, scoring Mangini from third. The Jaxx took a 4-3 lead into the ninth.
Anthony Varvaro (4-2) worked two innings of relief, allowing a run on a hit, but striking out four to earn his fourth victory of the season. Varvaro had not allowed a run in his previous four outings.
The Barons and Diamond Jaxx will play again on Tuesday night at Pringles Park, with game four beginning at 7:05 PM. West Tenn will give the ball to RHP Steve Bray (6-6, 2.94) on Tuesday.
