Papelbon Wins League Award

August 24, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Knoxville Smokies News Release

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee Smokies pitcher Jeremy Papelbon was named today by the Southern League as the Southern League "Pitcher of the Week," for the week of August 17-August 23. Papelbon is the second Smokies pitcher to receive this award this year.

Papelbon started twice for the Smokies last week and delivered both times. While not factoring in the decision in last Tuesday's 2-1 Smokies' win over Chattanooga, he kept Tennessee in the game by allowing only one unearned run on four hits in six innings of work. Papelbon would get a win on Sunday though against Carolina, shutting out the Mudcats for 6.2 innings and striking out four in the Smokies' 3-2 win.

Papelbon is 5-5 on the year with a 3.03 ERA in 29 appearances for Tennessee. The 19th-round pick of the Chicago Cubs in the 2006 MLB First-Year Player Draft has sliced over two runs off his ERA since mid-May (from 5.14 to 3.03), thanks in part to a 2.23 ERA (3-2 record) he's posted as a starter.
