August 24, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release
HOOVER, AL - Christian Marrero became the sixth different Baron to win a league player of the week honor in 2009 on Monday when he was named the Southern League Hitter of the Week. The Miami native hit .304 (7-for-23) with a home run and three doubles. He recorded four multi-RBI games in that period while driving in a league best nine runs.
The 23-year old first baseman/outfielder joins CJ Retherford (twice) and Stefan Gartrell as Baron players to win hitter of the week honors in 2009. Aaron Poreda, Daniel Hudson and John Ely have also nabbed pitcher of the week honors this season. David Cook was named the Topps Player of the Month in June.
Marrero, who joined the Barons on June 18, is hitting .298 with 10 home runs and 39 RBI in 58 games for the Barons. He began the season with Winston-Salem, and is hitting a combined .306 on the year (tied with CJ Retherford for 1st place among White Sox farmhands playing in full-season league), 17 home runs (4th), and 73 RBI (3rd). Marrero powered the Barons to a 5-2 record last week, and a 16-6 record thus far in August. He is hitting .319 with eight doubles, six home runs and 19 RBI on the month while keeping the Barons within striking distance of first place Jacksonville in the second half South division standings. The Barons are currently three games behind the Suns in the second half.
The Barons won the first-half South Division Title and will open the playoffs at Regions Park on Thursday, September 10 with game two taking place the following night on Friday, September 11. Game one will feature a Thirsty Thursday promotion while game two will feature post-game fireworks. Tickets to both games can be purchased online, over the phone or in-person at the Regions Park Box Office.
