Talons out as BayHawks Take Down Westchester Knicks

January 15, 2016 - NBA G League (G League)
Westchester Knicks News Release

ERIE - It was a nail-biter through and through in Erie tonight as the Westchester Knicks (14-9), the official NBA Development League affiliate of the New York Knickerbockers, fell to the Erie BayHawks (9-11) 89-87 after a failed dunk attempt resulted in a Westchester foul with 1.4 seconds on the clock.

The two teams traded eight leads in a first quarter full of back-and-forth action. Taking twice as many shots, Erie's 12-for-26 shooting was just slightly less efficient than Westchester's 9-for-15. Neither team led by more than four points in the quarter, but five turnovers for five points from the Knicks gave the ball-owning BayHawks a four point edge after the first twelve minutes.

Erie held on to the lead through another ping-pong quarter, with Westchester taking a slight three-point edge to pull within one at the end of the first half.

Westchester tied it up quickly, taking the lead and holding onto it off of a 27-15 third quarter. At one point in the attack, Westchester committed three consecutive turnovers, but the BayHawks were unable to capitalize on any of them. Erie's first six points all came from guard Keith Appling with the home team finding themselves down by 11 heading into the final quarter.

Erie knocked down a 13-point deficit on a 17-5 run to take back the lead with under four minutes to go in the game. A three-shot foul on Jimmer Fredette gave the Knicks back the advantage as Fredette knocked in all three, but Erie's Jordan Sibert answered back with a three of his own to tie it up. In the final seconds, Melvin Ejim powered down the court for an attempted slam, deflected by Westchester's Thanasis Antetokounmpo. It looked as though the teams would head into overtime but a foul was called on Antetokounmpo. Ejim sank both shots to put Erie up by two; the Knicks unable to make a shot in the final 1.4 seconds and the BayHawks held on to win 89-87.

Travis Trice II led all scorers with 24 points, hitting 4-of-6 from downtown and nabbing four rebounds with two steals. Westchester's leading scorer Jimmer Fredette finished with 22 points, going 7-for-7 from the line and just missing the double-double with nine assists. Jordan Bachynski supplied 13 points, seven rebounds, and four blocked shots in the loss.

Jordan Sibert paced the BayHawks with 18 points, also grabbing three rebounds. Devyn Marble finished with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists, while Keith Appling and Alex Davis contributed 12 points each.

The Westchester Knicks continue on their four-game road-trip, traveling to Canada tomorrow, Jan. 16, 2016 to take on the Raptors 905, the Toronto Raptors' affiliate, at 7:00 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on MSG 2 and the NBA Development League's YouTube channel.
