Tacoma Rainiers News Release
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Tacoma Rainiers (34-23) secured contributions from every member of their starting lineup in a 9-1 trouncing of the Las Vegas 51s (30-27) on Monday night at Cashman Field.
Every member of the Tacoma starting lineup notched a hit in the Rainiers 18-hit night. Shortstop Chris Taylor and third baseman Zach Shank both notched four hits each and combined for three doubles, three runs, and four RBI. Left fielder Daniel Robertson (2x5), first baseman Efren Navarro (2x5), and second baseman Tyler Smith (2x4) also check in with multi-hit efforts.
Tacoma starting pitcher Brad Mills (2-1) turned in 5.2 innings of one-run ball for the Rainiers, earning his second win of the season. He walked two and struck out four.
The Rainiers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after scoring at least one run in each of the first four innings, including a two-run effort in the second. Robertson, Taylor, and Shank combined to drill four RBI singles during that span, while Smith added on with a solo home run in the fourth.
Nevin Ashley checked in with his own solo home run to put Las Vegas on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning, cutting into the Rainiers and making their advantage 5-1.
Tacoma notched five hits and took advantage of a Las Vegas error to score four runs in the top of the eighth, extending their lead to 9-1. Designated hitter Mike Baxter started the rally with a leadoff single and proceed to steal second and advance to third on a throwing error by the 51s catcher - Shank followed with an RBI single to score Baxter. Following two quick outs, the Rainiers strung together three consecutive two-out hits - including doubles from Taylor and catcher Mike Zunino - to polish off the offensive outburst.
The Rainiers bullpen was represented in the blowout by Kraig Sitton, Jonathan Aro, and Blake Parker, who combined to hold Las Vegas to just one hit over the final 3.1 frames. The trio issued no walks and struck out five 51s batters.
The Rainiers will send right-hander Adrian Sampson (6-3, 2.83) to the mound to square off against 51s righty Gabriel Ynoa (6-1, 2.84) in the series finale tomorrow, Tuesday, June 7. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. PT.
