New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Adrian Nieto finished a triple shy of the cycle and drove in a career-high five RBI, while three Zephyrs pitchers combined on a three-hitter as New Orleans defeated the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, 11-2 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Zephyrs broke the game open in the sixth when they erupted for six runs, their highest-scoring inning at home this season, and reached double-digit runs scored for the first time since last August 18.
An error by Yadiel Rivera got the rally started, and the Z's wound up sending 10 hitters to the plate. Destin Hood plated his second run of the day with a chopper past third baseman Jake Elmore, and three batters later, Isaac Galloway singled up the middle to score two runs.
Nieto followed with a double into the right field corner to score two more, his second hit of the game to extend his hitting streak to five games. The Zephyrs catcher added a three-run homer in the eighth off Ariel Pena to complete his career day.
Hood collected another RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, giving him his 13th multi-hit game and seventh multi-RBI game, both team highs.
Elliot Soto chipped in two hits for the Zephyrs, who took three out of four games in the series while holding the Sky Sox to a total of four runs.
Colorado Springs broke up the shutout bid in the seventh on a two-run homer by Will Middlebrooks, the only hit surrendered in 4 1/3 innings of relief by Greg Nappo (3-3).
Jose Urena made his first start for New Orleans since April 18 and threw 52 pitches in 2 2/3 innings.
Brent Suter (1-3) was charged with the loss despite allowing just one run in five innings.
Following an off day on Wednesday, the Zephyrs welcome the Omaha Storm Chasers for a four-game series starting Thursday at 7 p.m.
