Grizzlies fall 6-1 to Chihuahuas Monday night

The El Paso Chihuahuas defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 6-1 Monday night at Chukchansi Park. El Paso starter Daniel McCutchen outdueled Astros' top pitching prospect Joe Musgrove. McCutchen (6-3) picked up the decision after he tossed six shutout innings, allowing six hits while striking out three. Musgrove (2-2) suffered the loss, also going six innings, allowing six runs (all earned), on nine hits, walking one and striking out five.

The Chihuahuas scored first in the top of the second when Ryan Schimpf (3-for-4) hit a solo home run to right. His 13th homer of the season gave El Paso a 1-0 lead.

The Chihuahuas extended their lead in the top of the sixth after a RBI double by Schimpf. Casey McElroy followed suit with another double, scoring two runs. Jason Hagerty added a two-run homer to right, giving El Paso a 6-0 lead. It would be the last inning for Musgrove.

The Grizzlies scored in the bottom of the seventh when Eury Perez (3-for-4) hit a RBI single to center. Fresno trailed 6-1 through seven innings.

The Grizzlies would add one final run in the bottom of the ninth when Perez singled to right, scoring Jon Singleton.

Grizzlies' relief pitching (Chris Cotton, Kevin Chapman and James Hoyt) threw three shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out five Chihuahuas.

The four-game series concludes tomorrow morning with an 11:05 PT first pitch in Downtown Fresno. Grizzlies RHP Brady Rodgers (4-3, 3.28) will face Chihuahuas LHP Frank Garces (1-0, 2.97).
