Sioux City Explorers News Release

Kansas City, KS - In a game that saw a total of 27 runs scored and a combined 37 hits the Kansas City T-Bones beat the Explorers 14-13 in walk off fashion in a game in which Kansas City never lead.

Sioux City would race out to an 8-0 lead in the first two innings. A six run first which was highlighted by a Blake Schmit grand slam the fourth slam of the year for Sioux City. And a 2-run home run by Dean Green in the second made it 8-0 X's in the blink of an eye. For Schmit and Green it was both of their first home runs in an Explorers uniform.

Kansas City would use the long ball to help scratch their way back into the game. Their first three runs of the game came on solo homers.

Colin Walsh with his eighth home run of the season was the first run on the board for Kansas City in the second inning. Solo homers from Tucker Pennell and Mason Davis in the third made it 8-3 Sioux City.

In the fourth the X's extended their lead with a solo home run from Michael Lang that ringed off the left field foul pole and extended their lead 9-3.

But Kansas City in the fourth would cut into that lead. Anthony Phillips lead off with a double. Would advance to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Brett. Back to back singles and a walk loaded the bases for the T-Bones with two outs. Noah Perio Jr. drove in two runs with a base hit to right field and cut the X's lead to 9-6.

The T-Bones weren't done though as in the fifth they added two more runs, a single to lead off the inning and a two run home run by Anthony Phillips cut the X's lead down to 9-8.

Sioux City would respond with a rally in the sixth a single by Luis Durango and a Michael Lang walk would put two runners aboard for Jose Sermo who would hit the fourth home run of the game for Sioux City. The three run bomb over the left field wall made it 12-8 Sioux City. It was Sermo's 20th home run of the season. To go along with 24 stolen bases already it makes him the first player in franchise history to compile a 20/20 season. Sermo on the day finished 4-5 with 4 RBI's and 74 total on the season putting him one behind teammate Jay Baum for the league lead.

Dean Green on the consecutive at bat would be hit by a pitch. Would then steal his first base of the season, and advance to third on a pass ball. Jay Baum would drive him in with his 75th RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to make it 13-8 Sioux City.

The T-Bones would answer with a four run inning of their own. In the seventh Danny Hayes lead off the frame with a single, he would be driven home by Anthony Phillips who tripled. Phillips would also single in the eighth completing the cycle for the Kansas City short stop. A Pennell base hit brought home Phillips. With two outs in the inning the T-Bones drew a walk and a single. Colin Walsh and Noah Perio Jr then each singled to drive home the runners and Kansas City pulled within one run 13-12.

In the ninth the first three men to the plate all reached, Todd Cunningham and Walsh singled. Perio then doubled down the right field line plating both of them to finish the ball game with a walk off 14-13 victory. Perio the former Explorer went 4-5 with a walk and 5 RBI's.

In total there were 8 home runs in the game, with four homers on each side. Kansas City had three players that collected four hits in the contest (Walsh, Perio, Phillips) and another two that had three hit ball games. The 22 hits the T-Bones pounded out were the most the Explorers have given up during the 2018 season.

Sioux City now returns home for the final three games of the 2018 regular season as they will face the Texas Airhogs for a three game series beginning on Wednesday with first pitch at 7:05.
