Cleburne Railroaders News Release
SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota - Patrick Palmeiro went 2-for-4 with a double, but Cleburne tied a season-high with 17 strikeouts in a 5-0 loss to the Sioux Falls Canaries at Sioux Falls Stadium on Tuesday night.
Palmeiro's two-hit effort was his 20th of the season - the third-most among Cleburne hitters in 2018 - and he now has 15 hits over his last 11 games, but his two-out single in the 5th inning was Cleburne's last hit before a stretch of 11 consecutive strikeouts recorded by Sioux Falls pitching.
Cleburne starter Jesus Sanchez went five innings and gave up five runs - three earned - on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
The Railroaders struck out 12 Sioux Falls hitters -- Jeff Dally had three strikeouts in the 7th inning and Tyler Wilson had a pair of strikeouts in the 8th - but Sioux Falls starter John Straka went six scoreless innings and gave up five hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts for his fourth win of the year.
The Canaries opened the scoring on a little-league grand slam in the 4th inning. With the bases loaded, Maxx Garrett hit a two-run double to right-center. Hunter Clanin airmailed the throw home, allowing Jordan Dean to score, and then Jesus Sanchez threw wide of the plate to allow Garrett to circle the bases.
Jabari Henry clubbed a solo homer in the 5th - his 13th of the year - to extend the Sioux Falls lead to five.
Angelo Gumbs knocked a two-out single in the 1st inning, extending his hitting streak to a season-best six games. Mike Gulino went 1-for-3 with a single and a walk.
With the season series against Sioux Falls now complete, Cleburne heads to Lincoln, Neb. for a three-game series to wrap up the five-game roadtrip. Game 1 of the series is set for 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday night, and the Railroaders will throw RHP Josh Hodges in the series opener.
The Railroaders return home for the final series of 2018 on Saturday, September 1 against the Texas AirHogs. Cleburne has just two home games remaining - Sept. 1 and Sept. 3 - and all ticket/promotional information can be found at www.railroaderbaseball.com or by calling (817) 945-8705.
