Kansas City Monarchs News Release
WINNIPEG, Canada - The Kansas City T-Bones used a four-run fifth inning to secure an 8-2 win in the series opener against the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Friday night at Shaw Park.
The T-Bones got the scoring started in the top of the first inning when Kennard Jones singled to right field and scored Joey Gathright and Jairo Perez on a throwing error by former T-Bones right fielder Ray Sadler. The Goldeyes countered with two in the bottom of the first inning when Sadler drove in Yurendell De Caster and Ryan Scoma on a two-out double.
Then, leading 4-2, Kansas City sent nine batters to the plate in a four-run fifth that included RBI singles from Kennard Jones, Brandon Jones and Trevor Coleman. Brandon Jones went three-for-five in the game with two RBIs. Joey Gathright and Jairo Perez each added three hits, also.
Kansas City starting pitcher Rick Zagone (1-2) went six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits and only two walks. Reliever Keith Picht pitched three innings and picked up the save on just one unearned run on three hits.
Winnipeg starter Matt Rusch (5-4) took the loss as he surrendered eight runs in 4 2/3 innings.
The T-Bones (35-50) have won three consecutive games. They will continue their three-game series at Winnipeg (44-38) Saturday night at 6 p.m.
