Saints' Offense Silent in 6-0 Loss to Explorers

SIOUX CITY, IA - The St. Paul Saints offense scored 29 runs in their previous three games at home, but they have proven all season long they are a different team away from Midway Stadium. That was evident on Friday night as they were blanked for the sixth time this season, 6-0, to the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis and Clark Park as Ryan Lucero threw his first professional complete game shutout in just his ninth professional game.

The Saints managed just six hits on the night, all singles, and never had a runner get past second base. The best opportunity they had to score came in the fifth when Joey Becker and Jose Hernandez reached on back-to-back singles to start the inning. Lucero, however, got Donald Blunt to fly out and struck out Adam Seaman. Adam Frost then was robbed of a hit when he hit a deep fly to right. Peter Barrows first turned to his left and then turned back to his right and made the catch as he fell on to the seat of his pants.

In the sixth the Saints put two men on when Willie Cabrera reached on a two out error by shortstop Leugim Barroso and Brad Boyer singled him to second. Becker would strike out looking to end the inning.

Lucero retired the final six hitters and nine of the last 10 as he didn't walk a hitter and struck out two.

The Explorers got Lucero all the runs he would need in the first. Eliezer Mesa led off the game by reaching on a throwing error from Frost at short. Anthony Kaskadden singled him to second. A fielder's choice put runners at the corners and an RBI single from Austin Gallagher made it 1-0 Explorers. Yusuke Inoguchi drove a double to the right-center field gap that scored Sam Judah to make it 2-0. On the play Gallagher was thrown out trying to score, but catcher Dwight Childs left the game following the collision.

In the second inning Adrian Martinez hit a solo homer for the Explorers, his third of the season, to make it 3-0.

Saints backup catcher Adam Seaman collected his first professional hit in the seventh inning when he singled to right. He appeared to injure himself on the play, but remained in the game.

The same two teams meet in the second game of the three game series on Saturday night at Lewis and Clark Park at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Anthony Claggett (7-4, 3.41) to the mound against Explorers LHP Mike Jefferson (0-0, 0.00). The game will not be on Club 1220 AM because of the Green Bay Packers game, but can be heard on line through saintsbaseball.com courtesy of the Minnesota Sports Broadcast Network.
