Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (56-28) lost 5-4 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (55-30) at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Friday night.
The RedHawks scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning and held off a late Wingnuts' rally to preserve the win.
With the Wingnuts leading 2-0, Buddy Sosnoskie led off the top of the fifth with a groundball single through the left side and took second on Mitch Einertson's bloop single to center. After Todd Jennings struck out, Zach Penprase loaded the bases with a bloop single to right field. Ronnie Bourquin hit a sharp groundball to C.J. Ziegler at first base. Ziegler's throw to the plate for a force attempt on Sosnoskie bounced away from Cole Armstrong and went out of play. Sosnoskie and Einertson scored the tying runs, while Penprase and Bourquin each moved into scoring position. Nic Jackson followed with a two-run double down the right field line that made it 4-2. Two batters later, Keith Brachold drove in Jackson with a bloop double down the left field line.
RedHawks' starter Brian Ernst and relievers Joe Harris and Nathan Kilcrease kept the score at 5-2 into the final inning.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, John Rodriguez lined a single to left field against reliever Chris Bodishbaugh. Ziegler followed with a two-run home run to left-center that cut the RedHawks' lead to 5-4. Derrick Miramontes relieved Bodishbaugh following a five-pitch walk to Brent Clevlen that put the tying run on first. Miramontes recorded the save when Abel Nieves grounded into a game-ending double play at second base.
Wichita took an early lead in the bottom of the first. Jake Kahaulelio doubled down the right field line and scored on a line drive single to left-center from Rodriguez.
The Wingnuts' second run came in the bottom of the third on a Clevlen double play ball with the bases loaded and no outs.
Junior Guerra took a tough loss for Wichita, allowing five runs, two earned, on five hits in eight innings. Guerra walked three and struck out a career-high 11 batters. It was Guerra's third consecutive start with double digit strikeouts. Guerra struck out eight of the the RedHawks' nine starters.
Nick Walters worked a scoreless top of the ninth. Guerra and Walters did not allow a base hit in eight of nine innings.
With two runs scored Kahaulelio now has 81 on the season, which ties a Wingnuts' single-season record set by Juan Richardson in 2011. Kahaulelio was also hit by a pitch twice in the game, giving him 19 on the year. Jorge Delgado held the previous franchise record with 18, also in 2011.
Ernst picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in five and two-thirds innings. Ernst walked two and struck out four.
