Gary, IN - Tim Pahuta drove in five as Sioux Falls bashed their way to a 12-5 victory over the RailCats. With the loss, the RailCats dropped to 47-36 while Sioux Falls improved to 36-49.
The Canaries have taken all four contests at U. S. Steel Yard and seven of the eight matchups between the teams this season.
In the first, Mike Massaro reached with a one-out flair double and scored on Christian Vitters double that stayed fair down the first base line to make it 1-0 RailCats.
Alain Quijano retired the first six Canaries until the top of the third when three straight Sioux Falls batters singled to load the bases. With one-out Cory Morales hit line drive back up the box that hit off of Quijano to tie the game. Quijano threw two warm-up pitches but walked off the mound after the second pitch and was removed.
In the injury shortened start, Quijano allowed four runs on four hits in two and a third innings. He took his seventh loss of the season.
Taylor Sewitt replaced Quijano and gave up a first pitch single to right to score two and give Sioux Falls a 3-1 lead. Sewitt then hit Reggie Abercrombie with a pitch to load the bases again. Tim Pahuta followed with his league-leading 25th home run to wipe the bases clean and make it 7-1.
The Canaries added three more in the fourth against Sewitt. A solo homer by Stephen King led off the inning and later Reggie Abercrombie, batting with the bases loaded, plated another with a groundout and Tim Pahuta drove in his fifth of the game with a sac fly to left. After the inning, Sioux Falls led 10-1.
In the top of the seventh, Jared Clark led off with a solo homer to left; his third straight game with a homer, to make it 11-1 Sioux Falls. The Canaries added another run in the eighth when Corey Morales hit a sac fly to drive in Nick Van Stratten.
The RailCats cut into the lead in the bottom of the eighth when Craig Maddox doubled and came home on a Ryan Babineau RBI single. Drew Martinez and Ryan Brockett each singled to load the bases. Nick Liles made it 12-3 with and a fielders choice and was followed by Adam Klein who drove in a pair to make it 12-5 with a single.
Kyle Ruwe earned his tenth victory of the season with six innings of one-run baseball. Ruwe is now 3-0 in three starts against the 'Cats this season.
