Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Mets continued to keep winning baseball games on Wednesday, beating the Iowa Cubs in a rain-soaked 4-3 game that ended after five-and-a-half innings due to the steady downpour. The Mets have now won the first two games of this week's series, seven of their last eight games overall, and own their best record of the season.
The game featured a start time just past 11 a.m. due to Education Day at NBT Bank Stadium and was played through a steady rain throughout. In the second inning, each team took turns scoring three runs. In the top of the second, Iowa (19-22) received a two-run homer from Brennen Davis (his third homer in as many games) plus a solo shot from BJ Murray, Jr. that made it a 3-0 game.
In the bottom half of the frame, it took Syracuse (24-15) three batters to tie up the game. After the first two batters of the inning went down in order, José Iglesias doubled to keep the inning alive, Mike Brosseau doubled Iglesias home to make it a 3-1 game. Brosseau is on an unreal run right now. In his last three games, Brosseau has four extra-base hits, including three home runs and a double, plus four runs scored and four runs driven in.
Then, Yolmer Sánchez smacked a game-tying, two-run shot to make it 3-3.
After the brief flurry from Iowa in the top of the second, Mike Vasil settled in on the mound for Mets. The big right-hander from Boston worked arguably his best outing of the season, allowing just the three runs on three hits in five innings with one walk and three strikeouts. Vasil faced his final 11 Cubs batters without allowing a hit. In fact, aside from the four-batter sequence that produced the three runs in the top of the second, Vasil did not allow a hit in the rest of his start.
In the bottom of the fifth, with rain continuing to fall, Hayden Senger provided the eventual game-winning blow. The catcher crushed a no-doubt home run off the videoboard beyond the left-field fence, pushing the Mets to a 4-3 lead. It was Senger's first homer of the season.
After the Cubs went scoreless in the top of the sixth, the game was delayed and then officially called as the rain intensified. It goes in the books as a Mets 4-3 win and consecutive triumphs to start the week against Iowa.
Syracuse is finally home after two long weeks on the road. This week's series against the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, the Iowa Cubs, continues on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. from NBT Bank Stadium. Right-hander Justin Jarvis is expected to start for the Mets.
