Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
Norfolk, Virginia - David Dahl completed the cycle in game one of what turned into a doubleheader sweep for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (15-23) as they downed the Norfolk Tides (20-21) twice by scores of 4-3 in game one and 5-3 in game two on Wednesday night at Harbor Park.
Game One
Dahl got right to work on the cycle by homering to leadoff the game, his fourth homer of the season and first leadoff homer for the IronPigs this year. Later in the first inning, Jordan Luplow doubled and later came in to score on a Weston Wilson RBI single.
Norfolk got one back in the last of the first as Heston Kjerstad hit a solo homer, his 11th of the season.
The Tides jumped ahead on a Daniel Johnson two-run homer in the last of the second, his seventh of the campaign.
In the third, Dahl collected his double, driving in Cal Stevenson who had doubled before him, tying the game at 3-3.
In the fifth, Stevenson singled and Dahl then singled him to third. Luplow drove in Stevenson with a sacrifice fly to give the 'Pigs a 4-3 lead they never relinquished.
Dahl completed the cycle in the seventh, tripling to left-centerfield, his first triple of the season and first since 2022. Dahl becomes the third player in franchise history to hit for the cycle, following Maikel Franco (8/23/14 vs. Syracuse game two of a DH) and Michael Taylor (8/12/09 vs. Louisville).
Tyler Phillips (4-2) went the distance to earn the win for the 'Pigs, firing seven innings and allowing just three runs on eight hits and a walk, striking out a season-high seven. It is the first complete game for Phillips since 2017.
Chayce McDermott (1-2) suffered the loss for the Tides, allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out eight in five innings.
Game Two
Both offenses started slow in game two, with the 'Pigs breaking the ice in the third. Cal Stevenson swatted a solo homer to start the frame, his second of the season, to make it 1-0 IronPigs.
Stevenson added two more RBI with a two-run double in the fourth, extending the lead to 3-0.
Norfolk climbed all the way back, scoring three times in the sixth. After a run scored on an error, Maverick Handley drilled a double off the wall to bring home another run to make it a one-run game before David Banuelos singled home Handley to tie the game at 3-3.
With two on and two out in the seventh, Simon Muzziotti slashed a two-run double to the leftfield corner, putting the 'Pigs ahead 5-3. Max Lazar (S, 2) closed out the game with a perfect seventh for the 'Pigs, inducing two groundouts and a flyout on just seven pitches.
Ryan Burr (1-1) is credited with the win for the 'Pigs after allowing a run in two-thirds of an innings on three hits, striking out one.
Kaleb Ort (0-1) suffers the loss for the Tides, allowing two runs in one frame on three hits, striking out one.
Michael Mercado started for the 'Pigs and was superb despite not factoring into the decision. He retired the first 13 batters he faced and ultimately went five shutout frames, allowing just a hit and a walk, striking out a season high seven.
The 'Pigs and Tides face off again on Thursday, May 16th at 12:05 p.m. David Buchanan (3-2, 3.89) is handed the ball for the 'Pigs while the Tides turn to Garrett Stallings (0-1, 4.74)
