Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Syracuse, NY) - Jason Martinson's infield RBI single coupled with a throwing error by Deven Marrero scored the game-tying and game-winning runs with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Syracuse Chiefs came from behind to defeat the Pawtucket Red Sox, 3-2, on Friday night at NBT Bank Stadium.
The PawSox (11-10) led 2-1 entering the ninth, but committed three errors in the frame as the Chiefs (11-9) won their second straight to begin the series. Noe Ramirez (0-1) was charged with the loss despite not allowing an earned run.
Trea Turner led off the bottom of the ninth with a grounder to first base that was misplayed by Sam Travis, and Turner then stole second base on the very next pitch. After Ramirez then retired Scott Sizemore, he struck out Kevin Keyes swinging but the ball popped out of Swihart's glove and rolled into foul territory.
Swihart collected the ball but threw wide to first base and was charged with an error that gave the Chiefs runners at the corners with one out. After Matt Skole walked to load the bases, Martinson came up and set the winning chain of events in action.
Marrero made a great diving stop on a ball in the hole at shortstop that scored Turner and tied the game. His throw towards second base caromed off of Skole, who was arriving at the bag, rolled into centerfield and allowed pinch-runner Jose Lozada to score the winning run.
Pawtucket starter Brian Johnson held the Chiefs to just one run and six hits in 5.2 innings pitched and left with his team leading 2-1. Ryan LaMarre's first PawSox home run and Swihart's RBI single against Syracuse starter Taylor Hill gave the PawSox their two runs.
Hill lasted six full innings and permitted two runs on six hits. Reliever Juan Gutierrez (1-0), making his Chiefs debut, earned the win with 1.2 scoreless frames of work.
Marrero, Swihart and LaMarre each recorded a pair of the PawSox' nine base hits. Pawtucket reliever Anthony Varvaro tossed 1.1 hitless innings of relief behind Johnson. Syracuse stranded 14 runners on base for the game.
The PawSox play game three of their four-game series in Syracuse Saturday at 1:05 p.m. Pawtucket southpaw Roenis Elias (0-1, 3.86) is scheduled to make the start against Syracuse righty Austin Voth (0-1, 2.00). Radio coverage begins on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the PawSox radio network at 12:35 p.m.
The PawSox will return to McCoy Stadium on Thursday, May 5 for the first contest of a four-game homestand against the Rochester Red Wings. Good seats for all games in the series are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
