Drew Hutchinson pitched six strong innings in the Bisons 2-1 win over the IronPigs on Friday.

A drizzly atmosphere at Coca-Cola Park did not prevent the Bisons from coming away with a win in Allentown, PA on Friday night. The Herd defeated the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 2-1, thanks to a strong outing by starter Drew Hutchison, and a key late inning RBI by David Adams.

With Adams pinch-hitting for Alexi Casilla in the top of the ninth, Adams drilled a double to left field, which scored Jon Berti, and put the Herd up 2-1. IronPigs' left fielder, Nick Williams, jumped to catch Adams' hit, but the ball hit off his glove, allowing for the RBI double.

Hutchison, in his fourth start of the year for the Bisons, allowed just two hits through the first four innings, before finding some trouble in the fifth. A Cedric Hunter double was followed by an RBI single off the bat of Ryan Jackson to put Lehigh Valley up 1-0. The righty settled down, and left after six frames with six strikeouts and just the one earned run. He settled for a no-decision.

IronPigs' starter Mark Appel also started strong, striking out four Buffalo batters through two innings, and allowing only two hits through the first five innings. However Appel, the number one overall draft pick back in 2013, granted a game-tying knock to Casey Kotchman in the top of the sixth, and was pulled from the game.

Both teams saw standout defensive plays, despite the less than ideal playing conditions. Two diving catches by IronPigs' outfielders Cedric Hunter and Wil Venable in the fourth and sixth innings took away potential Buffalo extra base hits. In the eighth inning, Lehigh Valley reliever James Russell made an over the shoulder diving catch to thwart Andy Burns of a potential infield single.

Buffalo also benefited from some great defense. With two runners on in the bottom of the sixth, Jio Mier provided a leaping grab at shortstop to take a hit away from Wil Venable.

Both team's bullpens worked into and out of jams in the seventh and eighth innings, with rain beginning to fall harder by the eighth. Chad Jenkins relieved Hutchison in the seventh, pitching two scoreless frames, and picking up his second win of the season. Chad Girodo secured the win in the ninth, earning his first save of 2016.

Game two of the Bisons' three game road trip is slated for 6:35 p.m. on Saturday. Left-hander Scott Diamond will take the bump for Buffalo, and will be matched up against righty starter David Buchanan.

BISONS NOTES:

After starting on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dalton Pompey has sat in back-to-back games, due to a bruised left heel... Jesus Montero extended his hitting streak on Friday to 13 games, thanks to a single in the sixth inning. He would pick up another single in the eighth, to bump his average up to .333... A.J. Jimenez's stolen base in the fifth inning was his first of the season, and his first since last June 2.
