Louisville Bats News Release
DURHAM, N.C. - The Louisville Bats clinched a second straight series victory with an8-3 win against the Durham Bulls on Thursday night. A five-run eighth inning led the Bats to their fifth straight victory for the first time since June of 2014.
After good pitching from both teams the first two innings, the Bats came out firing in the third inning with a little help from two balks called on Bulls right-hander Matt Andriese (ND,1-2), his fourth and fifth of the season. Andriese would leave the game after five innings, giving up three runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out four.
Andriese's first balk came after Bryson Smith was hit by a pitch. Two batters later with Smith on third, Andriese was issued his second balk, sending home Smith thus giving the Bats a 1-0 lead.
In the next at-bat Jose Peraza doubled home Juan Perez to extend the Bats lead to 2-0. Two straight Bats hits would follow and the Bats left the third inning leading 3-0.
Led by back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning, the Bats saw their lead diminish to 3-2.
Bats right hander Josh Smith's (ND, 2-1, 1.13)night came to an end after six innings pitched, giving up five hits and two earned runs. Smith walked one and struck out five, tying his second most strikeouts in a game this season.
With righthander Steve Delabar (W, 1-0, 2.89) in relief, the Bulls tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh inning due to a throwing error.
In the eighth inning, the Bats jumped on the Bulls bullpen with five runs, capped off by a Jose Peraza home run, his first with Louisville.
Jesse Winker would add three hits including a double as the middle of the Bats order provided most of the damage in the win.
The 8-3 Bats win marks the first time since 2001 that they have won the first two games at Durham in a season.
The Bats can sweep the series tomorrow when righthander Robert Stephenson (1-1, 0.75) takes the hill against Bulls left hander Blake Snell (1-1, 2.51). First pitch at Durham Bulls Athletic Park is scheduled for 7:05 ET.
