Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Thanks to an eleventh inning three-run homerun off the bat of Tyler Collins, Toledo defeated Charlotte in a back-and-forth affair Friday night by a score of 9-6 at BB & T Ballpark, snapping their five-game losing streak.
On the heels of an extra-inning defeat to Gwinnett that went fifteen innings, Toledo turned the tables and won an extra-inning thriller in Charlotte. Getting the win for the Mud Hens was Jeff Ferrell, making his second appearance for Toledo, who pitched the tenth and eleventh innings while giving up two hits and striking out four.
Cameron Maybin got the game started with a leadoff double and eventually came around to score thanks to a Tyler Collins sacrifice fly in his first plate appearance for Toledo on the season. Toledo's offense kept things rolling in the third inning when Dixon Machado plated Chad Huffman and Maybin with groundball double to the leftfield wall giving Toledo a 3-0 lead.
Matt Boyd was unscathed until the fourth inning when he gave up a two-run homerun to Vinny Rottino, which cut the Mud Hens' lead to 3-2. The homerun was the first relinquished by Boyd during the 2016 season. The Knights tied the game, 3-3 when Danny Fields hit a sharp ground ball, which took a fortuitous bounce for the ex-Mud Hen for an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Boyd (4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 4 SO) was chased out of the game in the fifth with the bases loaded and two outs, but Preston Guilmet came in and closed the door shut.
Charlotte took their first lead of the game, 4-3, in the sixth inning when Jacob May notched a triple and scored two pitches later when Tim Anderson managed an RBI groundout. Not to be outdone, Machado came up with a clutch two-out two-run single in the top of the seventh inning putting the Hens back on top, 5-4. A bottom of the seventh bases loaded Danny Hayes single put the Knights back on top 6-5. The rollercoaster affair coasted back in favor of Toledo as Nate Schierholtz evened things up, 6-6, when he cashed in a Charlotte error with an RBI single to score James McCann.
In the final round of the back-and-forth bout, Tyler Collins had the last laugh as he blasted a three-run homerun to right field giving the Mud Hens a 9-6 lead, which was how the game ended.
Toledo's 1-3 hitters (Maybin, Machado, Collins) went a combined 7-14 with 8 RBIs and 6 runs scored motoring the Mud Hens offense Friday evening. Also, pitching for Toledo during the extra-inning thriller was Michael Crotta, Drake Britton, and Logan Kensing. Charlotte's starter, Terance Marin, went 5.1 innings giving up six hits, three earned runs, and seven strikeouts, and Tyler Barnette picked up the loss for the Knights.
