LAST TIME OUT: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders had 16 hits in their 9-6 win over the Buffalo Bisons on Thursday afternoon at PNC Field. The RailRiders pounced on the Bisons in the bottom of the first when Clint Frazier hit his ninth home run of the season to give Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 1-0 lead. The Baby Bombers added to their total in the bottom of third as Wilkin Castillo led off with a solo home run of his own. L.J. Mazzilli and Shane Robinson then singled and Frazier smashed another long ball to put the RailRiders up 5-0.
The Bisons responded in the top of the fourth as Danny Jansen singled, Anthony Alford reached on an error and Jason Leblebijan plated Jansen with a base hit to right field.
The RailRiders answered quickly as Frazier and McKinney singled and Caldwell reached on a fielder's choice. Zack Zehner tripled to plate Frazier and Caldwell. Mark Payton then singled to bring home Zeher giving Scranton/Wilkes-Barre an 8-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Robinson singled and Rey Navarro walked. Frazier hit a deep fly ball to right to move Robinson to third and McKinney singled to bring him home.
Buffalo added five unearned runs in the top of the seventh following a two-out error that allowed Roemon Fields to reach Buffalo failed to score any more after their five-run fifth and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre walked away with their fourth consecutive victory -- a season-high.
Frazier had a great day at the plate going three-for-four with two home runs and four RBIs. Robinson was also three-for-four with three singles. Eight of the nine RailRiders batters had at least one hit on the day. Nestor Cortes threw well for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre going six innings allowing one unearned run and five hits while striking out four.
ROLLIN' INTO THE BREAK: Over the last 24 games the RailRiders have owned a 17-7 record to bring them up to 2nd place in the International League North standings. After taking both games in each of their two-game series up in Buffalo and at PNC Field, the RailRiders are 6-0-2 in their last eight series. The RailRiders entered the series June 29 against Pawtucket trying to draw themselves back to .500 for the first time since being 19-19 May 17 (Game No. 38) and are now four games above .500 for just the second time all season (7-4, April 14).
SWEEP APNEA: The RailRiders notched a fourth straight win over Buffalo this week and secured a four-game winning streak for the first time all season. It is the 7th time the RailRiders have had at least a three-game win streak this season, before finally getting over the hump with a fourth straight win. If you consider the split series a four-gamer, the RailRiders look for a four-game sweep of Buffalo since all the way back to... last season: June 16-18 which included a pair of wins in a doubleheader June 17.
TA-KNOCKED HIM AROUND EARLY: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders had RHP Masahiro Tanaka make a rehab start with them Wednesday night, He joins RHP Tommy Kahnle, RHP Adam Warren and RHP A.J. Cole as four rehab pitchers for the RailRiders in 2018. He allowed a single and a home run to the first two batters of the game before retiring 15-of-16 to close the outing. He is expected to start for the Yankees in Monday's DH against the Baltimore Orioles. The RailRiders anticipate facing rehabbing RHP Drew Pomaranz Saturday at McCoy Stadium -- 8G/8GS with BOS: 1-3, 6.81 ERA // 2G/2GS with PAW: 0-1, 9.00 ERA (7R/7ER in 7.0 IP)
WINGING IT: The RailRiders continue to get a strong performance out of its bullpen over the last two weeks. In 16G since June 17, the bullpen arms not named RHP Giovanny Gallegos or rehabber RHP A.J. Cole had combined for 54.2 IP, 34 H (5.6 H/9), 15R/10ER (1.65 ERA). Gallegos had struggled over his last three appearances with the RailRiders, allowing runs in all 3G (4.2 IP, 7 H (7-for-21, .333 BAA), 4R/4ER, 0 BB, 8 K) before tossing two scoreless innings Wednesday.
